I spent an evening with Sari; part owner of the Nubian Palace Café near to the Memnon. Sari’s cat Sfinksi was pregnant for the first time and was communicating with Sari with her usual noises. She was restless on Sari’s lap and kept moving her position. We both felt Sfinksi’s belly and could feel the kittens inside moving. Sari was soon to leave for Finland on a holiday back home. I said to Sari that perhaps the kittens will be borne tonight and what a good idea it would be for them to be born before she leaves, as she was worried. Well, that night Sfinksi did indeed have her three kittens. Sari left for Finland feeling quite happy. Sadly more than a week later Sfinksi went missing and was not seen again. The kittens were only a week and a half old. Sari’s friend Ahmed and I tried to feed the little kittens with a small dispenser but they would not take any milk accept what was on their lips. Sfinksi was missing more than two days now and I feared they would not survive very long without their mother. We still tried to feed the kittens but it was obviously not going to be enough to keep them alive. Then one of Sari’s friends who also had a mother cat “Milli” with her own kittens came to the rescue. We needed to move fast. Ahmed and friends took the orphaned kittens to Karnak and introduced them to Milli, the mother cat there. Well, as you can see in the photo Sfinksi’s little kittens (the dark ones) took to the new mother, as did the mother to the orphaned kittens. The kittens feeding are Sfinksi’s while the mothers own kittens (White) were sleeping aside. It was indeed sad to loose Sfinksi but her new kittens will live on thinking that the white cat is their mother.
"Sfinksi" Cat: A sad story that turned out to have a good ending.
