Dr. Masour Borail - Director of Antiquities for Luxor
I have just finished a lengthy conversation with Dr. Mansour Boreik, Luxor’s antiquities director.
As you may have heard Dr. Boraik was removed from his position as Director of antiquities for Luxor by the board of SCA. The good news is that he has been reinstated.
Apparently at the Franco/Egypt Centre Annual meeting for Karnak, it was evident in the eyes of some members an element of Jealousy and conspiracy that was clearly noticeable. Nevertheless, Dr. Boraik gave his presentation.
During the turbulent period since the revolution, only Luxor was able to continue running in a peaceful manner where there were very few problems with thieves and so on. This was down to Dr. Boraik and his team.
Although Dr. Boraik was very aware of the people who were jealous and were the instigators of a sort of conspiracy and underhandedness, He always continued to do his work and to liaise with the very many International Egyptologists, Archaeologists and Scientists. Never did he let this situation get in the way of his work.
Luxor has a great deal to thank Dr. Boraik for. When there were problems, he found ways around them and when there was a shortage on money to complete a project, he found a temporary solution to it.
The decision to remove Dr. Boraik was make on Thursday during the last remnants of the administration. Why at this time, is beyond imagination; or is it! I leave you to wonder why at this time. Many conclusions can be draw.
Dr. Boraik told me of his personal dream to see the Avenue of the Sphinx finished, where people could walk the pathway from Luxor temple to Karnak temple, the possibility of an annual carnival along the pathway where all locals and tourist could enjoy themselves, and it be part of Luxor life.
During the short time of being removed as director, Dr. Boraik got an overwhelming amount of support from all over the world that aired their thoughts, views and opinions. Many, many people made personal contact with him to give their support. These people are no ordinary people, some are eminent, some doctors, some professors and scientists, directors of museums, all walks of life that are qualified or share a passion in the ancient history of Luxor.
The conspirators behind what you might say was a plot, do not share the same enthusiasm and passion for the work done here in Luxor. Why was only Dr. Boraik removed out of the many hundreds of directors? Well! Because he is in charge of the most famous of all Ancient Egyptian sites in the world.
Dr. Mansour Boraik is now back in Luxor and I for one am very happy indeed. It means his good work here in promoting research, training and giving Egyptians the chance to become qualified can continue with vigour.
Welcome back, look forward to seeing soon.
