Esna a Town/Village
After visiting the Temple of Khnum in Esna, I walked around the quite large town, although I think the locals might call it a village.
Esna in itself is indeed quite a poor town with only the temple to attract tourists. If it were a normal season there might have been the odd cruise ships to stop aside for its passengers to visit the temple. I found the town quite amazing in its own way. Although much poorer than most I have been to, it has quite a unique atmosphere. It is easy to see that the small shops only serve the locals. There are many and various traders and on my day there, there were many a smile to be seen. We had tea and drinks at a local cafe across from the temple and watched the local life going about us. Naturally it's the children that make the day with there endless smiles and hoping to gain a favour in the way of a coin, a sweet or pen. I went fully equipped with sweets and pens.
