Tutankhamun Tomb KV62 – Radar Results Conference.
Yes, yes, yes - 90% Sure.
Dr. Mamdouh El-Damaty – Minister of Antiquities was the first to address all those attending this conference.
Dr. Mamdough explains. We went into the tomb of KV5 as it was closed to visitors and that we could do a test run there. We went to one of the rooms where behind the wall, we already know what’s there. This would give us special data of what we have already found. We then do the same test in the tomb of Tutankhamun in the antechamber. Behind the antechamber West wall, we know we have an annex and solid wall. So we got a good result as we already have from KV5 and what is behind the West wall of the antechamber of Tut’s tomb.
We then went directly into the burial chamber and did scans of sides South West and North. The primary results of the scan give us very positive result, very good result. We have something here behind the West and North walls, could be a burial chamber, especially behind the North wall. This result is a primary result; we need more time to sort the data and to give us a better result. We need more than one month. Mr. Watanabe will take all the data with him to Japan and after one month we get the final results. We can say now that we are 90% positive, I think it is a very good result.
Prof. Nicholas Reeves. The final analysis of our results will not be available for at least a month. The idea had its origins of a laser digital scan taken a few years ago resulting in a physical map of the walls. On close examination of these scans, highlighted the apparent presence of the closed doorways. On the West wall potentially leading to an additional Tutankhamun period store room labeled “x” in the cutaway diagram and that of the North to a corridor continuation labeled “y”
The proposal I put forward was that the burial of Tutankhamun was actually a tomb within a tomb and the continuation of “y” might potentially lead to the parts of the original owner of the tomb. It’s the survey of the North wall, which has provided immediate food for thought. The results may be seen here in blue on the diagram. What will be apparent to even the most uninformed viewer is the clear transition from what appears to be bedrock to something quite different. The radar transition appears to be unnaturally straight and to be located at precisely the same point as the traces in the plaster that I have previously identified. Clearly it does look from the radar evidence that the tomb continues as I have predicted. There is a corridor beyond room “j” room “j’s” concealing North wall.
Clearly the results are very encouraging and amply warrant the continuation of our investigations to the next stage. Mr. Watanabe will now provide a more technical account of the work and its preliminary results, which you can judge, for yourself.
Mr. Watanabe (Radar Scientist). Through an interpreter we are told - The reflections of the radiation from the left to the right (Blue part of diagram) we find a little bit, maybe empty space behind. The difference between the left side and the right in this figure. The left side is solid bedrock but in the right hand, seems like artificial wall.
I spoke to Dr. Nicholas Reeves after the conference concerning the next stages of investigation. I spoke about the possibility of drilling a small hole to allow an optic fiber camera to take a look behind the wall. He says this brings all sorts of problems. The chamber has been hermetically sealed for 3,347 years, the atmosphere inside would be quite special, and it may contain pollen or other things. We would not want air to seep in or out without first doing an analysis and study so that all can be recorded in the proper manner.
My thoughts. There are some possibilities depending on the outcome of the investigations and the evidence of chambers being there behind the walls. The drilling of a hole would possibly be the next stage. This may be done either through a hole in one of the Magic brick alcoves or through the wall from within “ja” (Treasury) or a similar not too damaging point. If indeed there is evidence of a chamber that might present wonderful treasures of all kinds, then how to get to it. Perhaps it is possible to make a small opening at the bottom and below the painted section of the wall. If large and wonderful things were detected, then a larger opening would be necessary. The Italians are experts at removing frescoes and painted walls intact, just like in Pompeii and many others places. The experts are out there.
There just might have to be some very difficult discussions to be made at high levels in the near future, or not.
What is great though, is the tremendous anticipation it has created throughout the world. I think we are all wishing for something big to be found in our times and since Howard Carter’s days. The positive attitude of the Minister and Government officials is commended.
Tutankhamun’s tomb is still open to the public as is also the replica one at Howard Carters House. Tut’s Original tomb is on a special ticket at 100le, I believe the replica is still 50le.
