Yesterday I sent a text in Arabic to a friend that lives at the St.Pachomius Monastery. My text said "Are you safe at the monastery" the reply I got was " لا " = "No" I then phoned him, he said he was alright and that the police were there. Because of the language barrier it was not possible to ascertain exactly what was going on. I was invited to visit there on Monday.

It was by all accounts a very quiet night in Luxor with almost empty streets, a little ghostly I believe. It would be very nice to think that we might have some more of these quiet nights to come and perhaps with some shops open and including the banks which we all so very much need. We in Luxor are living in an unpredictable time and it is hard to know where things are leading or what might happen next. Perhaps what is happening now in Luxor is new to us or perhaps the elders have seen something like this in the past. I am quite sure and hope that for the locals it will bring them together, lots a chat around a tea and shisha in the cafes. For the local Luxor people, I wish you all well and hope that some sense prevails soon and all can get about their businesses and lives once again, perhaps to even have that dream of things getting back to as it used to be and for the tourists to arrive once again in great numbers. Good luck. Dr. Mansour Boraik still awaits news about his work here in Luxor. He has done and tried to do so much for Luxor and had good future plans for Luxor in general.
I hope Dr. Mansour will stay here in Luxor, he would be greatly missed if not so. There seems to be many personality problems and clashes within the SCA in Cairo but this should not be allowed to affect the good work done by so fewer people. Let us all wish that Dr. Mansour well and that he will continue his good work here. I for one will greatly miss him at the Sunday winter lectures at the Mummification Museum. |
